Supplemental Instruction
What is SI?
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an internationally recognized academic support program offering free, regularly
scheduled study sessions for traditionally difficult courses. Three to five 50-minute sessions using collaborative
learning methods are held each week. SI sessions are facilitated by SI Leaders, who are undergraduate students who
have previously taken the course and demonstrated academic competency in the subject area. Attend once or attend
every session, The choice is up to you, but our data suggests that the more you attend, the higher your final grade
will be in the course.
We recommend attending SI on a regular basis.
Why SI?
SI is a free, voluntary opportunity for all students enrolled in a course. Students who participate in SI will:
- Learn how-to-learn while learning what-to-learn.
- Work collaboratively with peer students in a facilitated environment.
- Receive support from a trained, educated SI Leader.
Fall 2008 SI sessions are almost here!
Click on the courses/schedule menu option to view specific information about courses with SI. Updates for fall will be added before sessions begin on Tuesday, September 2, 2008. SI sessions occur in various locations on campus. Specific locations are listed in the schedule.
SI Leaders
The SI Leader staff consists of current ISU students who have previously enrolled in courses they lead, or have completed related coursework. All Leaders are supervised by trained professional staff members in the Academic Success Center. SI Leaders facilitate and encourage group learning of course material, rather than acting as authority figures who lecture to participants.
